What Jesus Taught About Riches

What Jesus Taught About Riches

The Jews were still living under the Old Testament, under which God greatly blessed His people with the material wealth of the world. Jesus brought a new dimension for prosperity. His teaching was so radically different that it shocked His own disciples. It went against the very grain of the Jewish religious leaders and was in direct opposition to the world’s standards.

Jesus taught that… 15 And He said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth. Luke 12:15. One of the conditions for discipleship with Jesus was that the person had to be willing to give up everything to follow Him. 33 So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be My disciple. Luke 14:33. Jesus told a rich, young ruler to sell everything that he had, and give the money to the poor.

Now when Jesus heard these things, He said unto him, Yet lackest thou one thing: sell all that thou hast, and distribute unto the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, follow Me.

~Luke 18:22.

Within the Church today, there is such a compromise with the world’s standards that Jesus’ teaching goes against the grain of many Christians. Their minds are so full of the world’s ideas, traditional theologies, and man-made formulas regarding prosperity that they do not know or want to hear what Christ taught. They are bound by spiritual ignorance. They do not know the truth, so they accept everything they hear.
