HE WAS BOTH DIVINE AND HUMAN IN ONE PERSON
When we think about the goodness of Jesus and all that He did for us, we think about Who He became to grant mankind the right to life. First of all, the phrase “Son of Man” is a reference to Jesus’ humanity, it is not a denial of His deity. By becoming a man, Jesus did not cease being God. The incarnation of Christ did not involve the subtraction of deity, but the addition of humanity. Jesus clearly claimed to be God on many occasions 16And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the Living God. 17And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but My Father which is in heaven.” Matt.16:16-17
But in addition to being Divine, He was also human. 6Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God. 7But made Himself of no reputation, and took upon Him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men. 8And being found in fashion as a man, He humbled Himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.” Phil. 2:6-8
He was both Divine and human in one person. Jesus was not denying His deity by referring to Himself as the Son of Man. In fact, it is highly revealing that the term “Son of Man” is used in scripture in contexts of Christ’s deity. The Bible says that only God can forgive sins. 7Why doth this Man thus speak blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but God only? Mark 2:7. But as the “Son of Man,” Jesus had the power to forgive sins 10aBut that ye may know that the Son of Man hath power on earth to forgive sins… Mark 2:10a. Christ will return to earth as the “Son of Man” in clouds of glory to reign on earth.
But Jesus held His peace, And the high priest answered and said unto Him, I adjure thee by the Living God, that thou tell us whether thou be the Christ, the Son of God. 64Jesus saith unto him, Thou hast said: nevertheless I say unto you, Hereafter shall ye see the Son of Man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven. Matt. 26:63-64
