DIVINE TURNAROUND – THE LAST BECOMES FIRST
Jesus turned the world’s values upside down. Consider the most powerful or well-known people in our world—how many got where they are by being humble, self-effacing (meek, different), and gentle? Not many! But in the life to come, the last will be first—if they got in last place by choosing to follow Jesus. Don’t forget eternal rewards for temporary benefits. Be willing to make sacrifices now for greater rewards later. Be willing to accept human disapproval, while knowing that you have God’s approval. 30 But many who are first [in this world] will be last [in the world to come]; and the last, first. Matt. 19:30
We cannot love God with all our hearts and yet keep our money to ourselves. Loving Him means using our money in ways that please Him. After the young man turned away from Jesus, unable to give up his great wealth (22 But when the young man heard this, he left grieving and distressed, for he owned much property and had many possessions [which he treasured more than his relationship with God]. Matt. 19:22).
What exactly did Jesus mean when He said, “Many who are first will be last, and many who are last will be first”? First, we should eliminate what He did not mean. Jesus was not teaching that the way to get to heaven is to live a life of poverty in this world. Scripture is clear that salvation is by Grace through Faith, not of works (8 For it is by Grace [God’s remarkable compassion and favor drawing you to Christ] that you have been saved [actually delivered from judgment and given eternal life] through faith. And this [salvation] is not of yourselves [not through your own effort], but it is the [undeserved, gracious] gift of God; 9 Not as a result of [your] works [nor your attempts to keep the Law], so that no one will [be able to] boast or take credit in any way [for his salvation]. Eph. 2:8-9
After all, without love, even the greatest sacrifice is worthless.
If I give all my possessions to feed the poor, and if I surrender my body to be burned, but do not have love, it does me no good at all.
~1 Cor. 13:3
